Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral to see a dentist?

No. A dentist is part of primary healthcare in Croatia, so you do not need a referral to see your chosen dentist. You only need a referral if your dentist refers you to a specialist, for example an oral surgeon or orthodontist.

Which preventive services are covered?

Dental tartar removal is covered up to twice a year for people insured through HZZO. A preventive check-up is also covered.

How often can I change my chosen dentist?

Once a year. You can do it online through the e-HZZO portal on e-Građani (gov.hr), or in person at the new practice.

Does HZZO cover fillings and dentures?

HZZO covers fillings on all teeth: composite fillings for front teeth, and materials for back teeth according to the current rules. From July 1, 2026, amalgam will no longer be used except in exceptional cases under EU Regulation 2017/852. HZZO partly covers dental prostheses. Implants and aesthetic procedures are paid supplements or private services.

What if I get a toothache in the evening or at the weekend?

Larger cities may have urgent or out-of-hours dental care. Check the current schedule on the local health centre or dental chamber website before going.
