Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral to see a dentist?

No. A dentist is part of primary healthcare in Croatia, so you do not need a referral to see your chosen dentist. You only need a referral if your dentist refers you to a specialist, for example an oral surgeon or orthodontist.

Which preventive services are covered?

At a dentist contracted with HZZO, ask before the visit which preventive and basic dental services are included in your rights under mandatory health insurance. The scope depends on current HZZO rules, your age and the dentist’s clinical finding.

How often can I change my chosen dentist?

Usually after one year from your last choice. You can start the change through HZZO services on e-Građani, at the new practice, or through HZZO. Earlier changes are possible only for prescribed reasons.

Does HZZO cover fillings and dentures?

Before any treatment at an HZZO-contracted dentist, ask what is included under mandatory health insurance and what would be charged separately. Dental rights and standard materials depend on current HZZO rules, age, indication and the dentist’s finding. EU mercury rules also affect the use of dental amalgam, so avoid relying on older filling-material wording.

What if I get a toothache in the evening or at the weekend?

Larger cities may have urgent or out-of-hours dental care. Check the current schedule on the local health centre or dental chamber website before going.
